MORE than 500 burgers were eaten at Kumbia's Melbourne Cup day on Tuesday.

And as hundreds of champagne corks popped and thousands of dollars exchanged hands, Premier Campbell Newman and Racing Minister Steven Dickson announced the Kumbia Race Club would receive a second race meeting next year.

Mr Newman said the June 1 meeting was part of his government's commitment to rejuvenate country clubs, racing and their communities.

"We're delivering an additional $4 million over the next four years to help re-build country racing across Queensland," he said.

"Country racing is the heart and soul of the industry and we are taking the steps needed to protect and reinvigorate these regional clubs."

Kumbia Race Club secretary Wendy Mathews said it was a surprise announcement.

"We knew Deb Frecklington (Member for Nanango) was keen to see the club hold another meeting, but we weren't expecting to get it," she said.

More than 1000 revellers walked through the gates for the Kumbia Races alongside the premier and his ministers. And the premier was working the barbecue, helping Graham Parsons and Margaret Gollinski cook steaks and onions.

"I made a promise to Marg last year that I would come back and help out," Mr Newman said.

The races coincided with the Queensland Cabinet meeting, which was held at the South Burnett Regional Council Kingaroy chambers on Tuesday morning.
