Winner of the 2011 Springfield Instrumental Talent Quest Aidan Atkins.
IT takes real talent to play the drums without a drum kit.
Talent that Goodna's Aidan Atkins has perfected over the years.
Since his early high school years, the 21-year-old has practiced a style of vocal percussion called beatboxing.
He produces drum beats, rhythm and musical sounds using his mouth, lips, tongue and voice.
"My friends taught me how to beatbox at school," Mr Atkins said. "After a while I discovered I had a talent for it."
When word got around two years ago that the Springfield Instrumental Talent Quest was searching for performers, Mr Atkins was keen to share his unique skill.
The contest was to promote the talents of local instrumentalists.
Mr Atkins said it took a bit of persuading to convince organisers that vocal percussion was an instrument.
But not only did he win over the organisers, he won over the audience too, taking out first place in the competition's inaugural year.
"It's tough competition," Mr Atkins said. "There are a lot of talented musicians in this area."
Organisers from Springfield Christian Family are again inviting the community to support its local musicians at the annual Instrumental Talent Quest.
This year's event will be held at the new stage at Robelle Domain, Springfield Central.
Springfield Christian Family's Pastor Phil Cutcliffe said it was a great opportunity for people to share their gifts with the community.
"And for the community to come together for a great night and also raise funds towards Westside Community Care's chaplaincy service at USQ," he said.
Action begins from 5pm on Sunday, February 12, with a sausage sizzle and drinks available for a gold coin donation.
The talent quest runs from 6pm to 7.30pm. For more information or to apply as a participant contact Westside Community Care on 3818 2915.
