Middle Park resident awarded citizen of the year

DECIDING on this year's Brisbane's Citizen of the Year must have been no easy task for the judging panel.

Scott Glendinning is Brisbane's citizen of the year 2012.

DECIDING on this year's Brisbane's Citizen of the Year must have been no easy task for the judging panel.

In response to the devastation caused by the 2011 floods, countless community members sprung into action to help those in need.

Before floodwaters had even receded, people were pulling up their sleeves to help not only friends and family, but complete strangers as well.

So competition was always going to be stiff for an award which recognised an individual who had made significant contributions to the local community.

This is why Middle Park's Scott Glendinning said he was shocked last Friday when he was presented with the honour at the 2012 Lord Mayor's Australia Day Awards.

"It was unbelievable," Mr Glendinning said. "The finalists up there with me were from all walks of life and each one of them deserved to win as well."

The 43-year-old was given the title for his tireless work helping people back on their feet during the flood recovery, despite the destruction to his own home and business.

During the flood disaster, his business was inundated with four metres of water, the roof of his home was ripped off in a subsequent storm and, as a final blow, his car was broken into.

But despite his personal misfortune, Mr Glendinning said it didn't slow his motivation in getting the area back up and running.

He not only rebuilt, but helped and inspired many other business owners and residents overcome their own losses.

And as President of the Jindalee Rotary Club, Mr Glendinning said his work with flood recovery in the community still continued.

"In my mind there was no other option, we just had to get back up and running," he said.

"I'm a pretty determined person and when I set my mind to something I see it through.

"You just have to push on and things can only get bigger and better."

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said Brisbane residents like Mr Glendinning had helped shape a city where citizens lived together harmoniously and could take advantage of the opportunities Brisbane offered.

"His huge drive and commitment to getting the area back up and running - participating in local events, organising fundraisers and supporting those in need - goes above and beyond," he said.
