WORMS: Get your hands dirty and learn how to compost using a worm farm.
TIME is running out for people to book a place in the free composting and worm farm workshops being held next month during International Composting Awareness Week.
Ipswich City Councillor Trevor Nardi said a number of the workshops had already been fully booked, with others filling quickly.
“We want to celebrate International Composting Awareness Week, being held from May 1 to 7, by running workshops so we can all learn about composting and worm farming,” he said.
“Organic waste is an important resource and about 60 per cent of the average household's waste usually sent to landfill is organic matter that could be used in compost bins or worm farms.”
To provide Ipswich residents with the right information to compost effectively, council is holding two types of workshops.
Learn how simple it is to turn food and garden waste into life-giving compost for the garden.
This workshop will give the absolute beginner the skills to start composting at home straight away.
Participants will learn the tricks of the trade that will guarantee a healthy compost and find out about the wide range of composting options available to suit any lifestyle.
Those attending will also go into the draw to win a free compost bin on the day.
A workshop is being held tonight (May 4) from 3.30pm to 5.30pm and includes a tour of the Woodlinks State School food gardens.
Further workshops are being held on Saturday, May 7, at Westfalen Community Gardens, Dunlop Street, Collingwood Park, from 1.30pm to 3.15pm.
Bookings are essential for all workshops and can be made by calling 3810 6666, e-mailing council@ipswich.qld.gov.au or going online to http://www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/
