New centre for Springfield Lakes

SPRINGFIELD Lakes is set to get a new community centre, with construction now under way.

State Member for Bundamba, Jo-Ann Miller turned the first sod on the centre which will double as a multi-purpose hall for Springfield Lakes State School.

The centre will be known as the Springfield Lakes State School Hall and Community Centre, with operation and management of it undertaken by a school committee.

Mrs Miller said the $5.5 million centre would become a welcome addition to the school and local community.

“This is going to be a real show piece in the community,” she said.

“The top level will provide access for students directly from the school oval and will feature a sports hall, stage, kitchenette and office space.

“The lower level has been designed for the community's benefit and will include meeting rooms, computer rooms and a kitchen area.

“This community space has a separate entry from the street and includes car parking.”

Mrs Miller said the project was a prime example of what could be achieved when school infrastructure projects took into account the needs of the community.

“Children's cooking lessons will be able to take place in the community centre and there will be space for adult learning, children's playgroups and a whole variety of meetings,” she said.

“The school itself will use the building for school plays and musicals, sport activities and a whole range of functions.

“Schools are our community hubs and this is an example of what can be achieved when both work together for the benefit of our students and the residents at large.”
