Darra 'finally' remembered

TWO years ago, Darra resident Henry Eustace believed the area he has called home for 80 years had become the “forgotten suburb”.

The long-time resident said his suburb was missing out on basic services such as footpaths.

But after receiving a long-awaited footpath outside his home at Arcadia Street, Mr Eustace believes times are slowly changing.

He said this change was mostly thanks to Richlands Councillor, Milton Dick.

“I had almost given up trying to get a footpath before I met Councillor Dick,” he said.

“I feel the area is a little less forgotten now.”

Cr Dick said his door knocking and community survey found the lack of footpaths were one of the residents' main concerns.

“Residents told me that basic services such as building new footpaths, fixing potholes and roads are important and sorely needed,” he said.

“Footpaths are essential if we're to live an active and healthy lifestyle.”

Mr Dick said out of the $1.2 million allocated in the 07/08 Brisbane City Council Budget for the construction of new footpaths, Darra hadn't received a cent.

“Residents are concerned about bumpy, cracked footpaths going unnoticed,” he said.

“It may seem like a small thing but I say if we look after the basics, local residents will be able to get around easier and be able to enjoy their suburbs.”
