The pair have recently been holidaying in Italy.

Staff and visitors at Madame Tussauds museum in London, which features a waxwork of Clooney, were mourning the situation on Wednesday.

The rumours left women, dressed in black, getting their hankies at the ready at the London venue.

A Madame Tussauds spokeswoman said of the Clooney waxwork: "He's one of our most popular male figures."
