Ultimate trip for Dominique

Dominique Simpson will represent Australia at next month's World Junior Ultimate Championships in Germany.

JUST days before frisbee prodigy Dominique Simpson boarded a plane bound for Germany, the 17-year-old declared she was overwhelmed with nerves and still in disbelief.

“I'm nervous because it has happened so quickly,” Simpson described her unexpected selection in the Australian Ultimate junior team.

“This is so big it just hasn't sunk in yet.

“I can't wait.”

Today (Wednesday) the Forest Lake College student will leave Australian shores to compete at the World Junior Ultimate Championships, which begins on August 2.

Ultimate frisbee was developed by university students and originates from America.

It's a non-contact sport with similarities to gridiron, with the objective to find a team-mate in the end zone to score.

It doesn't sound like much of a challenge, but Simpson revealed just how serious ultimate frisbee had become in Australia.

As a member of the Australian squad, she has had to follow a strict training regime, which includes sprints, cardio and agility sessions.

Simpson also had to meet her team-mates once a month for a training camp leading up to the world championships.

Unfortunately there was not enough room on the plane for the one who has been at the end of most of Simpson's lightning quick and precision throws – her beloved border collie Sam.

“He's the best training partner, I practise throwing to him nearly everyday,” she said.

“He loves it, he's probably the luckiest dog in the world.”
