Sports in brief

 Dane's Delhi-bound

GOODNA'S Dane Mulivai is bound for Delhi after sealing his spot on the Australian Commonwealth Games team with an emphatic 8-2 victory over Western Australian boxer Brendan Scully.

The 26-year-old had already beaten Scully at the Commonwealth Games Selection Trials earlier this year.

The Inala PCYC boxer was again ruthless from the onset of the bout, demonstrating terrific power and timing to squelch any of his opponent's attack and easily win the fight in Canberra.

Huge response to rowing facility

THE Satellite had a massive response to the story Club Ready to Move In published on June 28, about Centenary Rowing Club's new public rowing facility at Riverhills which was almost ready to be occupied.

I went on two weeks annual leave straight after that story was published, and during my break my inbox was flooded with emails from readers wishing to express their delight about the new rowing shed.

It's pleasing to see that so many people in our region have an invested interest in the future of our children, especially when it comes to sport and recreation.

I'm also happy to announce the club moved into the facility on Sunday, July 11, and early reports are the young rowers are thrilled with their new pontoon.

But something tells me that a few of them already miss the days when they had to tread through thigh-deep to enter the water.

Keith winning the fight

EVERYONE at The Satellite was glad to hear that Inala's Keith Brown continues to make good progress in his fight against cancer.

Mr Brown was diagnosed with cancer of the blood in November 2006, which destroyed most of the tissues and muscles in his spine and legs.

He had been undergoing chemotherapy up until recently when he started taking a new ‘wonder drug' and had gone on Zometa.

His friends and family members have noticed a great improvement in his health.

Mr Brown was the former treasurer and secretary of the Saint Mark's Tennis Club, which is now known as the West Brisbane Tennis Centre located at Richlands.

But it was his dedication to writing, including his regular columns and media releases he'd post to us for consideration since The Satellite opened its doors in 1978 that was most inspiring.

For many decades he was the eyes of tennis in Brisbane's west.

In October 2008, Mr Brown said because of his health he would no longer be able to write any more stories for us to publish, so we were stunned when we received a ‘news release' from him a few weeks ago.

Mr Brown will never be able to swing a tennis racquet again, but it seems there's nothing that can stop him from writing.

On behalf of everyone here at The Satellite, I'd like to wish Mr Brown good luck as he continues in his recovery.

Prestigious tennis title won

AS written by Keith Brown: Primary and secondary school students from the western districts of Brisbane competed at the West Brisbane Tennis Centre at Richlands on Friday, July 2, for the John Tupper Singles Memorial Trophy, in memory of the late John Tupper.

John was a member of the Saint Mark's Tennis Club of Inala in its founding year of 1964.

John died suddenly in 2002, aged 52 years, and left his wife, Desley, and three sons.

He had a great tennis talent in his earlier days.

The results were:

Winner Ryan Howard of Sherwood.

The Runner-up was Guy Otto of Doolandella.

Cougars seeking players

THE Western Cougars gridiron club is searching for players, especially juniors, to join the club to compete in the upcoming Gridiron Queensland competitions.

Gridiron is a great way for players of other football codes to stay fit during summer.

This season the Wacol-based Cougars are celebrating their 20th year, which will be extra special as it will be the first time they'll field a junior side since 2007.

But the club is still seeking more players in order to challenge other clubs with established junior teams.

Players wishing to register can either contact 0450 430 953 to visit www.cougarsgridiron.com.au.

Training for is held every Monday and Thursday evenings.

Weightlifting success

TWO weightlifters from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Springfield Weightlifting Club have preformed strongly at the 2010 Australian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships and National Under-15 Tournament.

Competing at their home venue, Michael Winn finished second in the men's youth 77kg class with best lifts of 77kg with his snatch and 95kg in the clean and jerk, while Joshua Wegert gained a silver medal in the under-15 men's team event.
