WESTERN Suburbs District Cricket Club has won their third consecutive Grade Club Championship for the best performance across all grades.
The victory was confirmed last week after the Graceville-based club had gone into the final round of the men’s fixtures just two points ahead of Toombul.
While all of the two-day games were drawn, Wests did well enough to move out to a 35.32-points winning margin and be crowned the coveted championship.
“Everyone is very proud of it,” Wests president, Greg Rowell said.
“The club championship is a special thing and we’re very proud to get it for the third time in a row.”
Rowell paid tribute to Wests’ women’s team for their dominance throughout the Katherine Raymont Shield.
For the first time in Brisbane First Grade history, results from the women’s competition counted towards the club championship.
And on Sunday, March 7, Wests clinched the shield after opening bat, Melissa Bulow helped her side power past Beenleigh/Logan’s total of 194 in the final with just three balls remaining.
“The women’s cricket side led the way for our club championship,” Rowell said.
“I must pay special mention to Melissa Bulow and Katherine Raymont (Wests women’s coach).
“Melissa made a statement as a player this season scoring about 600 runs at an average of 95.
“She also performed strongly with the (Queensland) Fire.
“She’s a real role model at the club and her 146-run knock in the final to get us home is the stuff legends are made of. We’ll be acknowledging that in due course.”
