Grindle Road gets speed reduction

RESIDENTS and community groups in the south-west have had a win with news the speed limit on Grindle Road will be reduced from 70km per hour to 60km per hour.

CDEA representative Shealagh Walker and Councillor Matthew Bourke.

RESIDENTS and community groups in the south-west have had a win with news the speed limit on Grindle Road will be reduced from 70km per hour to 60km per hour.

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said local environment groups like Centenary and Districts Environment Action (CDEA) had raised concerns the speed limit was too high for a road running through a key wildlife corridor.

He said the speed limit on Grindle Rd would therefore be reduced from 70km per hour to 60km per hour in the next few months.

“The local community asked us to take a look at this one and Jamboree Councillor Matthew Bourke has worked very closely with me to deliver this solution,” Cr Newman said.

Richlands Councillor Milton Dick, whose ward Grindle Road falls in, said he welcomed the long over due signage change.

“I’m happy that finally we will see a reduction in the speed limit along this road. It’s something the community and I have been calling for almost two year,” he said.

“I’m disappointed that it took the council so long to see common sense.”

Cr Bourke who has also been working on the issue said council had undertaken a traffic study on Grindle Road after CDEA brought it to his attention that cars were travelling too fast for local wildlife to cross the road safely.

CDEA representative Shealagh Walker (pictured) said she was pleased the change in speed would happen, and it would greatly affect wildlife in the area.

Ms Walker said there were regularly dead kangaroos along the road, and she believed the number of wildlife injured would decrease with the reduction in speed.
