Liberal MP Peter Slipper closes his eyes during the historic speech in Parliament yesterday.
SUNSHINE Coast MP Peter Slipper has denied that he fell asleep yesterday in Federal Parliament during an historic speech by Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The Liberal MP was spotted by journalists in the Canberra press gallery, who jumped to their mobile phones as he appeared to doze off.
A journalist from a Sydney radio station announced on her Twitter account: “There’s a Liberal MP dozing quite publicly through SBY’s speech ...”
A second journalist then identified the snoozing politician as the Member for Fisher.
Another reporter responded with: “Peter Slipper woken by the applause by SBY”.
A photograph of Mr Slipper, taken from a mobile phone on the Opposition side of parliament, was sent anonymously to the Daily yesterday afternoon.
The president’s speech was the first by an Indonesian leader in the Australian parliament.
The speech included indications that the country was hardening laws against people smugglers, condemning them to prison for up to five years if convicted.
The president also touched on how both Indonesians and Australians were guilty of unpleasant stereotypes of each other, an obstacle he felt needed to be overcome if both countries were to improve relations.
Mr Slipper denied he was sneaking in beauty sleep during the international leader’s speech, but conceded he may have closed his eyes.
“I’m not saying that I didn’t close my eyes,” he said.
“But I’ve been a very strong supporter of Indonesian and Australian relations.
“I thought it was a great speech.
“I did not sleep. I’m not saying that I didn’t close my eyes.
“If I’d known there was a camera, I wouldn’t have closed my eyes.”
Mr Slipper said he welcomed any cross-examination of what was included in the speech, saying he thought the president “reinforced that Australia and Indonesia were neighbours and friends and that we should share a synergy”.
“He very strongly reinforced the fact that when we need them, they’re there, and when they need us, we’re there.”
Mr Slipper said he was “privileged” to have been able to hear the first speech in parliament by an Indonesian leader.

This oxygen thief has been asleep for years.
He's been a useless, waste of time/space when contacted for assistance and/or information previously.

I don't call him "Sleeper" for nothing"...
And, perhaps I'm mistaken, but I don't think it's the first time.
The REAL surprise, of course, is that Sleeper ever wakes up at all...
Never was there a bigger waste of public money and a travesty of supposed representation than this lazy fool.
“If I’d known there was a camera, I wouldn’t have closed my eyes.” No kidding...
I hope there's footage of him waking up to the applause. I want to see it.
How could anyone NOT know that they would be recorded by 50 cameras in Parliament House? Because they were sound asleep - that's how. Sleeper's natural state...
Note to Tony Putin - next time you're cost cutting - get rid of Mr Bean. Save heaps - mostly in credibility.

He looks like Mr. Bean and now he behaves like Mr. Bean. This guy has quite a history of drunk/strange behaviour yet somehow keeps getting voted back in.
It's time for some new blood in coast politics.

Lets face it - I watch the speechon tv myself and felt like dropping off several times -- it was all pretty much rhetoric .. with a few highs like announcing the confirmation of the identity of the terrorist bloke who was shot.
what wonderful timing!!! can You believe that ?? what a coincidence -- they get the big one, on the day before the president addresses the Australian Parliament -- now that, Mary McKillop is Miracle!

Liberal in action. The guy works so hard for all his voters that he needs to catch up from time to time. This is not the first time Peter has been a Sleeper, and I am, guessing it will not be the last. However, I do imagine that the Indonesian people and their President may have the right to feel slighted, even though they have only just woken up to the need to make people smuggling a crime in their country.

Let us all be perfectly clear on this. We have some important, hard decisions to make...which we should not shy away from.
This is all only happening because we don't have a viable opposition on the Coast ;-)
Labor...don't make me laugh. Do you think those no hopers would do any more for the Coast than the State and Federal governments have...or, indeed, Mr Sleeper has.
I think that rather than constantly attacking and being negative, you lot need to work co-operatively with Tony Abbott to have a change in personnel representing us on the Coast.
Either that, or we need to vote the Lib/Nats back into power in Canberra so that Mr Sleeper may be given some work to do. Give him a portfolio - Make him Speaker of the House. Then he could sleep in Parliament to his heart's content :-)
Or maybe he could become Minister for the Yarts?

As others have said - always asleep. But fortunately not at the wheel.
"I was just closing my eyes." Yeah right - who hasn't heard that one from their 5yo? And if it were true wouldn't that be a worse protocol blunder?
Why the Libs continue to put up this serial non-performer I'll never fathom.

It's a fair bet that Alex Somlyay leaked the photo - he is always behind the Slipper slip-ups and loves to see these splashed across the Daily. It provides good cover for him as he never has anything worthwhile for a story about his efforts - as he never does anything, unless you were to cover golf. Time to go Alex - we need fresh blood representing us here!

time4change - I think you may have something there!
I had mistakenly thought that this photo was taken by a journo from up in the gallery.
But no, it was "taken from a mobile phone on the Opposition side of parliament". Someone seated at the same level as Sleeper and probably near to him. Someone in his own camp.
Now who would have a reason, motive or previous history of animosity to do that...?
They're like Laurel and Hardy - the pair of them. And we pay them VAST sums of money to do this.
What's wrong with this picture?

Give Peter Slipper a break, c’mon fair go.
For an old bloke who’s been there 2 decades it can’t be easy.
I remember that last 2 – 3 election campaigns Peter Slipper promised to fastrack the CAMCOS railway corridor and get Federal funding for more public transport.
I remember that last 2 – 3 election campaigns Peter Slipper promised to support the Kawana hospital. (He said he wrote a letter to the PM, Minister Health & the Treasurer I Think.)
Mal Brough got 6 or 8 lanes as far as Caboolture, he got the boot and Slipper stayed. The 6 or 8 lane road all the way to the Coast is still a looooooonnnnnnnggggg way off.
Well maybe if we give him another couple of terms we might see something achieved by Peter Slipper, if he CAN only WAKE UP!!!

There is no prospect of Messrs Slipper and Somlyay not getting preselected as the Liberal candidates in Fisher and Fairfax at the next Federal Election because they are protected by the grandfather clause in the State LNP merger agreement. They are in until they retire or are defeated.

and I still wonder why so many of my neighbours vote for the likes of him, vote for the religious right.
I don't vote labour - I refuse to vote for a party that won't use Australian spelling. I refuse to vote for the religious right. Doesn't leave many alternatives except a $200 fine every few years or a donkey vote.
still begs the question why so many of you vote for him.

In the Australian Parliament Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono historically spoke about major international issues that our two nations face, including the illegal migration and indications that our near neighbour, populated by millions, was hardening laws against people smugglers.
Our Liberal Representative to the Federal Parliament admitted he ‘closed his eyes’.
Us mere mortals would suggest he was sleeping, snoozing, dozing, nodding off.
Ironically it is Peter Slipper who normally makes the most noise, (like an empty vessel) when it comes to people smuggling.
The president’s speech was the first by an Indonesian leader in the Australian parliament.
Not only should Peter Slipper be deeply ashamed and embarrassed, but so should the local Liberals who keep this non achiever as their preferred Federal candidate.

Peter Slipper is the only person that exists in Peter Slippers world. He was a permanant member of the gravy train a long time ago. When is the Sunshine Coast going to wake up to this guy? I used to work in an occupation where I looked after politicians, rock stars and the famous to be. People ask me 'what were they like'? Only one person out of them all was arrogant and self centred!.......Now who was that again?

Great photo. Although the same could probably be taken at most public events he attends. Just a few months ago he was claiming not to be a drunk. Now he claims not to be asleep, when the evidence suggests otherwise. The Coalition is in deep trouble if Slipper, and Somlyay, are the best they can offer voters.

If nothing else, just remember this 'choice' photo on Election Day folks & stop voting for this fool. Little old ladies & grumpy old curmudgeons in all our retirement villages - this means YOU! Just change your number to another box - just once. It's not that hard. Your inability to change your rigid staid conservative views, get this sad excuse for a representative over the line every time.
Honestly, how disrespectful can this man be? He manages to makes all of us a laughing stock on the international stage time & time again.
Here's a heads up - in future give the goon a Red Bull or two before International Leaders address our Parliament. Might give the desired 'bright eyed & bushy tailed effect' we're looking for. The clock's tickin'. Your staff better get crackin' Petey will need a doona, a soft little pillow, a pair of trackys, uggies & a hot cup of Milo when POTUS Obama visits soon. Oh, and maybe one of those eye cover thingys (sleeping masks?) they give you on those long haul flights. He doesn't look too comfy sleeping in that position. Those chairs definitely need armrest operated layback features installed. And something to put your feet up on. Better look out Petey you might just wake up with a crick in the neck…or worse - a sharp pain in your back. Cutlery anyone?
Locals please I beg you - next time you vote - Make this dude get a REAL job - somewhere else.
I'd like to see that.
Can we at least vote for someone who can keep their flippin' eyes open? Maybe those big eyes are more of a burden than first thought? Do not drive, operate machinery or listen to world leaders - may cause heavy under eye baggage?
Keep on dribblin, Slippery. Libs it's time for this ol' pirate to take a long walk - off a short plank & with a PUSH if necessary. Right behind him is Alex Somylay - yep, Mr Nondescript - you're next - you're spot on the PGA tour awaits…
As one of the fastest growing regions in the country, we deserve & DEMAND some competent Federal Government representation for our region. I just wanna live to see ONE term of someone with an IQ higher than an amoeba. It's long overdue & guys I'm going grey waiting. This is beyond a joke. I'm over it.
Peter Slipper. You are the weakest link. EVER.
Goodbye. Shut the door on your way out. We do not need an encore.

Yep! He keeps getting voted in!!!!
And still i wonder why it is that anybody can possibly accept the contempt the parties, especially the Libs/LNP, show for the voters by letting fools like Sleeper through pre-selsection.
As long as the majority of voters continue to choose between one pathetic mob of 'sleeper types' and another they will continue to treat us with contempt.
They need to change but won't, unless the voters tell them loudly that it just isn't good enough!
We NEED to vote in some independents, to wake up the big boys and (sadly largely token) women.
If we were lucky would could even get some good MPs out of it, instead of party 'climbers' and klingons.

This picture captures the true essence of the MP for Fisher. At least he is consistent. He treats his constituents with the same disdain as foreign leaders. He is elected as a party hack. The electorate would have voted for a cane toad if it had been the Liberal candidate for the last 20 years. Even if the cane toad had B.O. and nudged the port a bit too much. Times may be changing, given the blogs above. Looks like he has only one friend, and that pseudonym may be Slipper himself.

Mr Slipper speaks with forked tongue. How rude is it to close your eyes, and nod off, on the rare event of a Foreign Leader addressing Parliament? This man is a drain on society. A waste of space in Canberra. An embarrassment to his electorate, his Party and now the Nation. He obviously has no interest in anything that goes on in Canberra, apart from ensuring the pay cheque gets deposited each fortnight. And that his Super blossoms. What do we have to do to get rid of him?????

Looking at the location of his seat - very back row, which in political speak: "not to be considered for a cabinet post".
Even when his party was last in power, this poor excuse was seated in the second back row.
Mr Slipper's greatest role during his political career reached the giddying heights of "Secretary to a Minister"
The best thing the LP could do is get rid of this career "nodding dog".

Nah - you don't get fined for voting for the "donkey" or the "informal" party .. is you show up at the polling station, get your name marked of the roll and slip the papers into the ballot box then you have officially voted. What you mark (if anything) on your voting papers is your business and is confidential.
