IPSWICH City Council is on the hunt for treasured photographs depicting the city’s early history as Ipswich marks 150 years since it first became a municipality.
Division 2 Councillor Paul Tully said the council was keen to continue to add to the city’s existing Picture Ipswich database.
“We want local residents to assist us with this goal and come forward with any personal photographs which could be added to Picture Ipswich,” he said.
“People only have to lend their precious photographs to the council for a couple of days.
“We do not keep the images but take them for scanning and uploading and then return them to their owners.
“We would be grateful for any new images we are able to obtain, as the council wants to build Picture Ipswich into a fine and ongoing resource for the local community.”
Council is calling for photos of Ipswich buildings and houses, people of interest, local businesses and industries in operation, early community gatherings such as sporting matches and church fetes and letters and documents are all of interest.
“We are especially looking for images different to those already on the Picture Ipswich website,” Cr Tully said.
“Council would also like to uncover the city’s oldest photograph and would be particularly pleased if this came to light during 2010 as we celebrate our 150th anniversary.”
Currently, the oldest photograph on Picture Ipswich is one of Elizabeth Pettigrew which was taken in Brisbane around 1860.
