MORE than 60 per cent of Australians want a new national anthem, saying they're sick of Advance Australia Fair, a survey shows.

I Am Australian, the Bruce Woodley tune featured in Telstra's advertising campaigns, came out on top as the nation's preferred anthem with support from 43 per cent of respondents.

About five per cent of the 1,301 people surveyed opted for pop song Great Southern Land by iconic Aussie band Icehouse, while four per cent chose Men at Work's 1980s smash hit Down Under.

Ten per cent voted for Waltzing Matilda by Australia's most-loved bush poet Banjo Paterson and one per cent said they didn't care what the anthem was.

The poll, conducted by travel website totaltravel.com, revealed 36 per cent of people were satisfied with Advance Australia Fair, but 60 per cent wanted it ditched.

Totaltravel.com marketing manager Paul Fisher said many voters felt strongly that a new national anthem should be chosen by public vote.

"A public poll would indeed test whether Advance Australia Fair was up to the test," he said in a statement on Monday.

"It's something the government might want to consider in the future."
