AUSTRALIAN fast bowler Mitchell Johnson will be rested from the first two one-day internationals against Pakistan.

Australian selectors on Thursday named separate 12-man squads for the opening two matches, the first of which is at the Gabba on January 22 followed by a clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground two days later.

Selectors opted to give Johnson a break on the back of his heavy workload through back-to-back three-match Test series against the West Indies and Pakistan.

Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said the pace spearhead would return to the side for the final three games of the five-match series.

Queensland all-rounder James Hopes was named to play in the opening game on his home ground with West Australian Adam Voges coming into the squad for the second match.

Squads - game one: Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke, Doug Bollinger, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, James Hopes, Mike Hussey, Shaun Marsh, Clint McKay, Peter Siddle, Shane Watson, Cameron White.
