SOUTHEAST Queensland and Northern New South Wales are in for more wet and wild weather in the coming days.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for flash flooding, damaging winds, high tides and dangerous surf for all south-east coastal areas and the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district east of Dalby.

Heavy rain and damaging winds that have caused flooding in south-east Queensland will move slowly south to affect the Northern Rivers andnortheast parts of the Northern Tablelands by Thursday.

Flash flooding and wind gusts in excess of 90 km/hr are expected.

Heavy rain and high winds will extendfurther southwards into northern parts of the mid-north New South Wales Coast by late Thursday and early Friday.

A separate Flood Watch has been issued for coastal rivers from the Queensland border to Nambucca.

Waves exceeding five metres in the surf zone are likely to produce dangerous surf and significant beach erosion between the Queensland border and about Smoky Cape from Thursday.

Emergency services advise people to keep clear of fallen power lines, stay indoors away from windows and keep children indoors.

Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.

Flooding in coastal streams and rivers is also likely, and a separate flood warning is current for coastal streams between Noosa and Coolangatta, extending inland to the ranges.

Damaging wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h are expected about the coast and
elevated inland areas.

Ocean waves and swells are expected to increase further about the coast south of
Cape Moreton.

Dangerous surf conditions are expected for the remainder the week with beach erosion. Tides will be higher than normal and are expected to exceed the highest tide level of the year.

The State Emergency Service advises that people in the affected area should:

• avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters
• seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees
• secure loose outdoor items
• beware of fallen trees and powerlines
• if near the coastline, stay well away from the water's edge
