PROMISING young athlete Mikaela Woodward is walking tall since returning from the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth.

This is especially so since leaving the competition with a bronze medal around her neck.

The 13-year-old claimed third place in the under-15 3000m race walk event with a time of 15:43.16.

Having competed in the national championships twice before, Mikaela said third place had been her best result so far.

"When I competed last year, I placed fifth," the Jindalee teen said.

"I didn't manage to break any personal bests this time."

"But I'm still really happy to have won a medal."

Since first taking up the sport more than seven years ago, Mikaela has made a big impression on the track, winning six consecutive state age group titles.

She said her sights were now on representing Australia at the 2015 World Youth Championships in Colombia.
