Pakistan plans to cull thousands of Australian sheep

THE council representing Australia's live animal exports industry has condemned moves in Pakistan to cull thousands more sheep, contravening a court order.

The Australia Livestock Exporters' Council released its first official statement since the initial cull of more than 7000 Australian sheep in Pakistan some weeks ago on Saturday.

The cull came after the sheep were reported to have been diseased and unfit for consumption, being turned away in Qatar.

It said the council was hoping a Pakistan High Court order, which deemed the sheep were healthy and fit for human consumption, would ensure the sheep could be processed.

Pakistan media reported the cull of the remaining sheep would be completed within days.
