THE upheaval in Western Australian cricket continued on Tuesday with coach Lachlan Stevens stepping down.

The announcement came just days after captain Marcus North relinquished his position in the wake of the Perth Scorchers' controversial trip to South Africa for the Twenty20 Champions League tournament where players were involved in a boozy night out.

Stevens, who took over the head coaching roles with the WA Warriors and Scorchers teams in November last year when Mickey Arthur was given the job as national coach, had previously been an assistant coach with the Queensland Bulls and in WA.

The 33-year-old admitted recent events had been "extremely challenging", but said he believed the WACA had laid the foundations for a bright future.

"A fresh coaching structure and new programs will ensure a greater depth of state squad going forward," he said.

Stevens acknowledged the timing of the announcement was "not ideal", but said it was "only fair for the WACA to begin the search for a permanent replacement since my future intentions have become clear".
