JPs will now be able to hear minor disputes

JUSTICES of the peace will now act as judges in minor dispute cases in Queensland following legislation passed in parliament.

Amendments to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal were passed on Wednesday night, paving the way for JPs to hear minor disputes of under $5000.

A six-month pilot program will be rolled out in June and 32 legally qualified and 81 non-legally qualified JPs have already undergone training for the roles.

One legally qualified and a non-qualified JP will begin hearing cases in regions including the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich and Brisbane.

"The trial will be used to assess whether the use of JPs in QCAT help reduce backlogs by freeing up QCAT adjudicators to deal with more complex matters," Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said.

"We will also be interested to see whether this reduces the cost of hearing disputes and improves the administration of Queensland's justice system."
