Gigi not just a pretty face

GIGI Edgley gets to let her hair down, and wear some killer frocks in Tricky Business.

The Rescue Special Ops and Farscape star returns to TV as mercantile agent Kate Christie in the new Channel 9 drama.

But Edgley is more than just a pretty face.

She still sees plenty of action as her character sets up stings, chases down crims and serves elusive debtors with collection notices.

"Every person I know, including myself, has some kind of relationship with debt, whether it's emotionally or financially," Edgley said.

"We live in an age where we're constantly borrowing from someone or something.

"When you put people under that kind of pressure and we end up chasing after them, the reactions these people have are quite bizarre in some cases, sometimes they're humorous and sometimes quite horrible.

"There's a range of stories we can tell through that premise."

Viewers can be forgiven for mistaking the show as a Packed to the Rafters clone, based on the initial promos, but after Monday's premiere it's clear Tricky Business is not a straight-laced drama centred on a wholesome family.

Kate is a single mum who fell pregnant with her daughter Emma when she was just 17.

She's trying to keep her life on track and her relationship with her mum, played by Debra Byrne, is not exactly blissful.

"The relationship with Kate and her mum is real and quite passive aggressive," she said.

"We don't want it to be too light and fluffy.

"You have those moments with your family that are dysfunctional.

"It's hard to be on the same level with them a lot of the time.

"Kate is just getting her life back together and winning back the respect of her mother."

Edgley is supported by a talented ensemble cast including Shane Bourne as Kate's father Jim, Sophie Hensser as Kate's sister and co-worker Lily, Odessa Young as Kate's daughter Emma and Lincoln Lewis as novice debt collector Chad Henderson.

Monday's episode ended with Kate, who Edgley describes as a control freak, being betrayed by her co-worker and lover Rick (Kip Gamblin).

After his get-rich-quick scheme falls over, he is forced to empty Kate's accounts to repay his debt to shady businessman Mario Maguire.

"It took her so long to allow Rick to be a father figure for Emma, which is massive, let alone let Rick into her heart and her world," she said.

"He's trying to do something so beautiful and gallant and step their life up to something a bit more secure, but from her perspective she doesn't see that side of it.

"She really tries to keep it together, that's the kind of woman she is, but underneath her heart is completely broken and crumbling."

Enter freelance mercantile agent Matt Sloane, played by Antony Starr, who Kate is forced to bring on board to replace Rick.

"He's extremely good at what he does even though he doesn't play by the rules," Edgley said.

"It's fascinating for her but also extremely frustrating."

So with her relationship with Rick on the rocks, is the gorgeous Sloane a potential love interest for Kate?

"No comment," she laughed.
