Car thieves 'ran like Forrest Gump'

AFTER two would-be thieves tried stealing his prized Holden HQ utility for the second time in two years early yesterday morning, Koongal resident Mark Simpson has finally had enough.

About 1.45am, , Mr Simpson woke with a start when he heard a huge bang outside his home.

He came out onto his balcony to see two men running away from his ute, which they had tried to steal before, losing control of the vehicle and sending it hurtling over a 1.5m retaining wall, stopping just before the steep drop into parkland across the road.

Mr Simpson said: "I came out and I saw one of them getting out of the car, and it looked like the other had been pushing it, and so I started yelling at them, and they ran like Forrest Gump.

"I immediately rang the police, and before they got here, one of the guys came back with his T-shirt, and I saw him try to wipe down the fingerprints on the steering wheel before I chased him away."

Queensland Police confirmed officers attended the attempted car theft and a patrol was conducted, but released no more detail.

He said it was the second time someone had tried to steal the ute, after a separate incident in April last year, when the ute got stuck on top of the retaining wall.

Mr Simpson said: "After what happened last year, when I heard the noise, I knew it had to be someone trying the ute again.

"I have been keeping the ute on chocks in the garage, and have even gone as far as making sure the battery isn't hooked up while it's in the carport.

"If I caught them again, what I'd like to do to them is string them up from the balcony and get the cattle prod into their sensitive areas."

After reporting the incident to police, he said it took about an hour for them to arrive, driving around the area and shining a spotlight into nearby bushland.

But since yesterday morning, he said he had not heard back from the police service.

Mr Simpson said: "I'm worried about what these people's children are going to be like - how are they going to turn out if their parents are doing this sort of thing?"
