Brisbane gets ready to Raise the R
What: Raise Your Roof fundraiser house parties
When: August 14, 2012
Where: Across Brisbane
A CROWDED dance floor of party-goers doesn't usually conjure up the mental image of humanitarianism.
But this month, revellers will be partying with a purpose - to support the homeless youth of Brisbane.
Corinda university student Lauren Crome is a volunteer at Brisbane Youth Service (BYS) who is helping kickstart a new fundraising campaign called Raise Your Roof.
The initiative encourages thousands of people across Brisbane to host a party, gig or community event to raise vital funds for homeless youth.
For almost 35 years, BYS has worked with homeless or at-risk young people to create positive change and pathways in their lives.
Miss Crome said money raised by the campaign would be used to meet the increasing demand for BYS services and help get young adults off the streets.
"When I first became involved with BYS, it was confronting to see how prominent the issue of homelessness was in Brisbane," the 21-year-old said.
"The organisation provides a vital service and looks after more than 3000 homeless kids each year."
Raise Your Roof multi-house parties will take place across Brisbane on August 14 - the night before the Show Day public holiday.
